Rapeseed (Brassica napus), also known as rapeseed, oilseed rape, rapeseed (and, in the case of one particular group of varieties, Rapeseed ), is a bright yellow flowering member of the Brassicaceae family (mustard or cabbage family). Rapeseed oil is cultivated mainly for its oil-rich seeds, the third largest source of vegetable oil in the world.
Rapeseed oil is used as diesel, as biodiesel, directly in heated fuel systems, or mixed with oil distillates to power vehicles. Biodiesel can be used in pure form in new engines without damaging the engine and is often combined with diesel fossil fuels in a ratio ranging from 2% to 20% biodiesel.
Due to the costs of growing, crushing and processing biodiesel rapeseed, biodiesel rapeseed from new oil costs more than standard diesel fuel, so diesel fuel is usually made from waste oil. Rapeseed oil is the preferred oil reserve for biodiesel production in most European countries, accounting for about 80% of the feedstock, in part because rapeseed oil produces more oil per unit land area compared to other oil sources, such as soybeans but mainly due to the fact that canola oil has a significantly lower gel point than most other vegetable oils.
Rapeseed is currently grown with High Nitrogen Fertilizers and their production generates N2O. As a fertilizer for rapeseed in N2O, it is estimated that 3-5% nitrogen is used.
